First Winter Snow Day & Having Fun - RunLog 12-29-15

Today was the first real snow storm of the year, so of course I had to be Harold being Harold and get out and play in it. Ummmm Harold the official weather report showed the temp as 12*F and -1 with the wind chill. Are you getting stooooopid again.

It was the first real snow and I tend to enjoy being out in the snow storms, there is just something about running on falling powder.

Plus I took a bunch of steps to ensure both Bennie and I were safe.

I didn't look at the thermometer before we started, but I knew the temps were in the teens and the wind/snow was whipping around.

For Bennie it was going to be 1-2 miles and no more. We were going to be running laps so that at no point would we be more than a half mile from the house. Also I was keeping a good eye on him to ensure he was not shaking and shivering too much and that he didn't get snow clumps in his paws.

At the end of 2.0 miles, he was done and more than willing to go inside.

As far as I was concerned it was all about dressing in layers, ensuring that my hands had enough covering them, using a balaclava, and my trail shoes.

There was a LOT of white ice under the 3-4 inches of snow on the road, so if I started to lengthen out the stride (while running downhill) and use my usual heel first landing, it was slip, slide time. So I was forced to run a little differently. I guess if I had to run in the snow all the time, I could/would change my running style, because there would be no choice.

The other thing that I did was SLOW DOWN. Yeah you hear it all the time for drivers to slow down in crappy weather and snow. Well runners need to stop looking at the pace and focus more on enjoying the views and the run when the roads are snow covered. Otherwise you will find that snow-covered pavement with your ass or planting a big kiss on that snow.

Overall, it was a pretty damn good run and I enjoyed running in the first snow. The extreme cold well that was not as much fun, but sometimes is just part of the deal. Does this mean that I will go out and run every time there is a snow storm or when it is bitterly cold.

This was a special situation, the first real snow of the winter and I got it out of my system. I will still be running outside a lot this winter, but at the same time I also know that the treadmills at Planet Fitness will get a lot of use this winter. Especially, when I am going to do a specific workout and want to make sure that it is at the quality I want.

Welcome back Old Man Winter, I hope you do not stay that long. A couple months would be about right and then you can head back north and let us get outside in shorts/t-shirts...hehehehehe.
