Not Feeling it and A Good Speed Work Session Later - RunLog 4-28-16

This post was written for and first appeared on One Foot In Reality.

Sometime you just don't feel like running...yes I said that and that is how I felt this morning before I went for a run with Bennie this morning - I think Bennie agreed with me.

WTF is going on?

A couple of things

1. It is frigging cold and I am ready to run in shorts and a tshirt. This crap of it being 36*F and 15-20 mph winds right out of the NW - it was not pleasant and I was bundled up like it was early March.

2. I have been updating my 40 years of running series and I was working on updating the 1983 Marine Corps Marathon post to re-post on Friday and it brought back a bunch of memories that I had buried and caused more than a few tears to be shed - again. Tough old bastid aren't I!!!

So mentally just wasn't into the run this morning.

However, we have noticed that when Bennie doesn't run, he misbehaves a lot more and since Mary can't run with the Bean...well it means that I get to :-). So we headed out the door, with one small difference.

I just ran old school with my watch and forgot that it didn't have auto stop until we turned around. I was still thinking about 1983 - (maybe someday I will get past that horrendous memory). So the run was probably a little quicker than the final time, but that wasn't the purpose of the run - it was to get out there and get it done.

On the way back, let's just say that Bennie was not interested in running and since I wasn't all that interested in it either, when we struggled back to the Lower Gate and shut it down at 3.0 miles.

I have a lot of thoughts running around in my head and more than a few memories of '83 and how much it has and does still affect and effect my running today. Yeah, you can't say that kind of experience...well becomes a deep part of who you are.

RUN #2

I wanted to hit certain paces on my speed work today and since I didn't have time to head to the track or Rail Trail, it meant the treadmill.

What did I do?

  • .50 @ 7.3 warm-up
  • .25 @ 8.7
  • .25 @ 8.8 - 1.0
  • .25 @ 8.9
  • .25 @ 9.1
  • .25 @ rest lap 3.5 up to 7.2
  • .25 @ 9.1 - 2.0
  • 25 @ rest lap 3.5 up to 7.2
  • .25 @ 9.2
  • 25 @ rest lap 3.5 up to 7.2
  • .25 @ 9.2 - 3.0
  • .75 @ 7.3
  • .25 @ 9.2

On the rest laps, I would drop it down to 3.5 and then when I got my breathing back somewhat kick it back up to 7.2 to finish the quarter. I was looking for the quality today, not a fast time overall and it seemed to work a lot better for me than hanging on at 7.2 for my rest laps.

I have pretty much decided to do the mile race down in Freeport on May 30th, with a couple of 5K's between now and then too - if everything holds together. I have never really raced a mile and I am of excited about it. It does mean that I have to adjust my training a little to focus on faster paces for that shorter distance.

Yeah, something different than all the same 5K's for me.
Lots of memories.
