My leg was a bit sore this morning from yesterday's faster run on the treadmill, so I decided to skip the AM run and see how it progressed during the day. Not bad and I even was given the opportunity to use some of my built up comp time to get out of work early today.
So of course I went for a run, but since the leg had been sore earlier I didn't want to do trails or fight hills, so that left out running at home or in most of Augusta (except maybe the Rail Trail). Then I had a flash of brilliance - I decided to go to Waterville and bang out 3-4 on some of the flatter sections over by Alfond Youth Center and the road going into Quarry Road.
What great choice!!!
Then on the way home I decided to stop by Olympia Sports - I have a 20% off coupon and well the LG7's are just about at 200 miles and with the wear on the toe area, I don't think they are gonna last that much longer as my daily trainers - I am just waiting for a wear hole to suddenly appear.
There were 3 pair of running shoes in this same category that intrigued me and I wanted to see if Olympia had any of them.
They had one out of three, so I tried them and a pair of U/A Gemini 2's on, both fit great, no issues with the width, very comfy, so I went ahead and bought the other pair - not the Gemini 2's which were $30 more. More to come on them, after August 6th - no I can't wear them until then.
Let's get to the run.

Notes/Observations about the run: Yes, I started out a little fast and then I got back to reality pretty quickly when I noticed that I was having a hard time breathing. Nothing like the lack of air to slow a runner down. Then of course I had to pee, so the big blue box became my friend on the very public Messalonskee Stream Trail.
After that it was just avoiding a rollerblader and a few baby carriages on the trail. The main reason for running the trail was I knew it would be shady (cooler) and by the water (cooler) - it was. Plus after that initial what in the hell are you doing Harold?, I stayed just on the other side of 9:00 minute pace for the most part.
I wasn't planning on running out to the yurt at Quarry Road, but I knew that there was another blue box and a certain cramping sensation told me to either find some bushes or run a little further to the blue box. Well now, I was actually feeling pretty decent so another mile added on to the run wouldn't be too bad.
As much as I do enjoy the trails in Quarry Road, I knew that today was not a day to run them and just stayed on the road, although I was tempted.
Yeah, coming back out of Quarry Road, I gotta admit that I slowed down a bit and really thought about bagging it at 4.5, but I like those even numbers, so I did a lap and got the 5.0.
Overall, I felt pretty good and it was pretty nice to run someplace where there were not a lot of killer hills, the roads were either wide enough that what traffic there was, was not a big deal and for a lot of the run, it had plenty of shade.
No I didn't run in the shoes I got at Olympia and when I got home and showed them to the wife, she just said those are a birthday present from me - right. What a great wife. |
